Job Description


The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018.
The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following positions:
Clinical Officer (01 Position)
Position Code: COGPC – 921
Reports to: Project Leader
Station: Kyamulibwa

Job Purpose:
The position will provide the general clinic care to study participants. The position participates in the screening, enrolment and follow-up research visits for participants in the study

Roles & Responsibilities
1. Principal duties;
• Participate in the optimal recruitment and retention of study participants at the site;
• Triage and screen patients for COVID-19;
• Explain the aims, nature & processes of the COVID-19 study to study participants there by obtaining informed consent and assent from participants and parents as appropriate;
• Taking vital measurements like blood pressure, mid upper arm circumference, temperature using infrared gun thermometer as well as height and weight;
• Administer study questionnaire using the RED CAPP mobile application and perform quality control on study documents;
• Draw blood samples from patient/study participants as appropriate;
• Test for Malaria, HIV and do Haemoglobin levels;
• Take both nasal and oral swabs for COVID-19;
• Fill appropriately all laboratory forms and deliver samples to the laboratory with accompanying chain of custody forms;
• Provide and document participant compensation Conducts study procedures while ensuring proper adherence to all the protocols for the study;
• Detect possible health problems and refer appropriately. Identify, attend to and timely report adverse events, serious adverse events and protocol deviations to the line manager;
• Organizes appropriate referral and follow-up for participants, if required (in consultation with a medical officer or line manager);
• To contribute to data cleaning, writing papers and publications;
• Participate in study stock management;
• To provide health education to study participant;
• Participate in project trainings and meetings; and,
• Assists in other research related duties as requested by the line manager i.e ensuring timely updates of lab results; ensuring timely updates of return visits; participating in drafting essential documents among others).
2. Financial Management;
• Ensure proper accountability of project resources in line with MRC/UVRI and LSHTM policies.
3. Line Management;
• Supervise counsellors and field workers when appropriate.

Person Specification
• Diploma in Clinical medicine, Health Sciences from a recognised institution;
• Registration with the Allied Health Professional’s council;
• Training in Good Clinical Practice/Human Subject Protection is desired;
• Should possess previous experience of working in a research environment
• Experience in handling patient records and Case Report Forms;
• Good updated knowledge of most common pathologies seen in primary health care;
• A good background of research ethics and procedures;
• Good interviewing and interpersonal skills;
• Communication skills;
• Computer skills; and
• Fluent in both spoken and written Luganda language.
