Med-Optics Limited, is a private company that was established in 2002 to provide a high standard of quality eye health services. Over the last 19 years, Med-Optics has established itself as a preferred provider of quality, investigative Optometry Services in Uganda. Our Customers can always be assured of quality eye health services with attention to detail and follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction.
We’re growing! The company seeks to recruit dynamic, innovative, self-driven individual(s) to fill the following vacancy:
Job Title: Optometrist Reports to: Head of Optometry Liaises with: Retail Business Manager, Service Centre Heads, Optical Assistants, Laboratory Technicians and Assistants, Office Assistants.

Job Purpose:
To attend to the sight defects of patients by taking relevant history, examination, investigations, diagnosis and draw out a clear plan of management, follow up and/or referrals to other specialised centres, observing all the medical ethics and in line with Med-Optics Strategic objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical and Optical
1. Engage patients to determine their vision problems or ascertain the reason for visit; taking and recording patients’ histories and lifestyle to understand what may have led to visual discomfort, eye diseases or disorders.
2. Examine patients’ eyes using observation, instruments, equipment and pharmaceutical agents. Analyzing fundus photographs, visual fields, OCT, tonometry results and any other ophthalmic instruments used for assessing visual abnormality presented or referred to the practice.
3. Carry out assessment and evaluation of eye defects of clients/patients and give proper individualized care and treatment in line with best practice and according to standard operating procedures. Analyze test results to determine the cause and nature of eye deficiency or disease. Formulate and implement treatment plans to counter eye problems and diseases.
4. Conduct paediatric optometry and binocular vision (orthoptics) management and prescribe therapeutic or corrective procedures such as eye exercises and patching for patients with strabismus or lazy eye. Administer Colour overlays for those with dyslexic tendencies.
5. Prescribe suitable optical devices to patients suffering from deficiency or defects in eyesight.
6. Conduct contact lens assessment and fitting as appropriate as an alternative for vision correction, giving good management advice and aftercare services appropriately.
7. Coordinate the delivery of low vision and rehabilitative services to patients who cannot be managed with either glasses/contact lenses and surgical procedures.
8. Provide pre and post-operative care to patients due to undergo eye surgeries such as laser vision correction and cataract removal. 9. Remove foreign substances from eyes and ensure that patients understand eye care after procedure properly, Provide patients with information on handling eye care. 10. Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other healthcare professionals if eye problems are beyond the scope of the practice of optometry.

Customer Care & Dispensing
1. Give clear explanations to patients of the features of the products best suited to their needs. 2. Ensure direct handover to optical assistants and assisting the Optical Assistants with complex lenses dispensing, prisms, measurements and frame selection. 3. Give appropriate advice, health education and counselling to patients and their caregivers on eye defects and health care. 4. Educate and counsel patients on factors that affect eye health such as visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety considerations. 5. Teach support staff how to dispense, fix frames and make adjustments to spectacles. Provide support for basic optics training to non-technical staff members.

Reporting
1. Prepare periodic reports and develop activity work plans in accordance with the Med- Optics Ltd reporting standards.

Qualifications and experience
• Degree in Optometry from a reputable institution.
• Three (03) years of relevant working experience in an Optical Centre.
• Experience in a business and customer care environment.
• In-depth knowledge of frame style trends, and eyeglasses.
• Principles and practices of records management
• Registered with Allied Health Professionals Council and has a practicing license.
