Job Description


The post-holder will contribute to the statistical aspects of the data collection, trial conduct and analysis of trial data. This will include analysis of;
• Baseline trial data to describe menstrual health, education and wellbeing in the study population
• Analysis of quantitative process evaluation data
• End line trial data to evaluate the impact of the intervention. The post-holder will liaise closely with the data manager and attend regular team meetings, and contribute to preparation of scientific manuscripts for publications. There will be opportunities for participating in epidemiological and/or statistical courses in the Unit.

Roles & Responsibilities
Principal Responsibilities
• Prepare regular checks on study data, data flows and data quality issues during the
• conduct of the study to help the research team monitor trial progress;
• Liaise with the data manager to ensure the trial data are complete, of high quality and
• ready for statistical analysis;
• Lead or participate in the analysis of the quantitative data from the MENISCUS baseline
• and end line surveys, educational assessment, and other quantitative data as assigned by
• the PI, including by contributing to the Statistical Analysis Plan;
• Participate in finalizing study tools and training data collectors in conjunction with senior
• trial personnel;
• Prepare for milestone events such as randomization, database lock, unblinding, analysis
• and reporting;
• Maintain close collaborative links with statisticians and other researchers at MRC/UVRI &
• LSHTM Uganda Research Unit as well as with other international partners;
• Disseminate research outputs through preparing scientific reports, presenting results in
• meetings with colleagues and collaborators, and contributing to high-impact publications;
• Contribute to the Statistics section’s collegial environment including through teaching and
• training activities and participation in regular academic/journal club meetings;
• Undertake additional tasks as required by the Principal Investigator, Head of Statistics or
• assigned supervisor.

Line Management Responsibilities;
• Interact with data managers, database programmers and data management assistants
• through the Head of data management platform.

Person Specification
• MSc in Medical Statistics or closely related subject;
• Possession of a PhD in Medical Statistics or closely related subject discipline is an added
• advantage;
• At least 5 years’ experience working as a statistician in a clinical research setting;
• Should possess experience analysing population-based data e.g. surveys or
• epidemiological studies;
• Experience analysing data in Stata;
• Experience writing Statistical Analysis Plans and presenting final study reports;
• Peer-reviewed publications commensurate with experience;
• Experience working with ODK or similar electronic data collection software;
• Experience analysing data from randomised controlled trials including cluster trials;
• Experience contributing to statistical aspects of grant writing and/or study protocols;
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary research teams;
• Should have good understanding of the key concepts of randomized trials;
• Understanding of data management role and procedures in clinical research;
• Strong management and leadership skills together with excellent communication,
• influencing, negotiating and engagement skills;
• Experience in conducting epidemiological and/or statistical training courses;
• Excellent statistical programming and analysis skills using Stata, R, or equivalent
• statistical analysis software;
• Should possess excellent attention to detail skills;
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and ability to communicate
• research results to non-statistical researchers;
• Excellent team player skills; and,
• Interest in adolescent health.
