Background
John Snow, Incorporated (JSI) is seeking an Accountant position for a five-year USAID- funded U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative Uganda Malaria Reduction Activity (MRA). MRA aims to improve the survival and well-being of Uganda’s most vulnerable pregnant women and children in selected regions. The Activity will work with the Government of Uganda to improve technical, managerial, financial, and leadership capacity at all levels of the health system.
Job Summary
The Accountant is a full-time position based in Gulu. They will be responsible for setting up and maintaining the JSI financial accounts and an up-to-date Mobile Money payment system, preparing expenditure projections, and documenting and reporting all expenses paid through the Mobile Money payment system. They will report to the Regional Program Coordinator – Acholi.
Responsibilities
1. Work with the Finance Manager and technical staff to project weekly cash requirements for the Mobile Money payment system, and initiate request of funds transfer to the Mobile Money account,
2. Ensure adequate cash is available for Mobile Money payments and that all due payments are made timely,
3. Receive payment requests from Activity Managers and/or Accountants in the field, verify beneficiaries and amounts requested for payments;
4. Initiate payments on the Mobile Money payment system and forward to the Finance Manager for onward review and approval;
5. Adequately document all payments made through the Mobile Money payment system and submit to the Finance Manager for approval;
6. Code all expenses according to the relevant accounts codes;
7. Submit all approved Mobile Money payment documents to the Finance Officer for entry into Quickbooks;
8. Perform end-of-month reconciliations (advance accounts, Mobile Money accounts); • Help the Grants Manager and partners to set-up their Mobile Money payments systems;
9. Assist the Finance Manager with the preparation of the annual expenditure analysis report and other reports as may be required;
10. Support non-finance staff through in-house trainings;
11. Interface and work with cross functional teams within the organization.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor degree in a finance, accounting or business-related field;
2. At least 3 years of relevant experience in financial management and/or accounting in an NGO setting;
3. Experience with QuickBooks accounting system strongly desired;
4. Working with Mobile Money payments systems is strongly desired;
5. Relevant experience with USAID-funded programs and knowledge of USAID rules, and regulations strongly desired;
6. Ability to deal appropriately with sensitive issues and maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times;
7. Ability to work independently, take initiative and manage various activities in a team setting with minimal supervision;
8. Proven ability to work as part of a team and to be self-managing;
9. Must be able to maintain confidentiality for all project and staff proprietary matters.
