Job Description


The Plantation Growth Coordinator (PGC) plays a vital role in managing and coordinating plantation/woodlot management projects. The role includes engaging farmers, ensuring the successful implementation of plantation strategies, promoting sustainable forestry practices within local communities, and collecting vital data on tree survival rates. The PGC is responsible for supervising plantation health, advising farmers, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

REPORTS TO: PLANTATION GROWTH OFFICER

LOCATION: VARIOUS AREAS IN NORTHERN UGANDA

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plantation Management and Monitoring:

  • Monitor and evaluate plantation performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective measures.
  • Conduct regular site visits to ensure plantations are maintained according to best practices.
  • Identify potential problems (e.g., pests, diseases, or environmental threats) and formulate action plans to address them.

Tree Survival Data Collection

  • Conduct survival checks by gathering data on the health and survival rates of planted trees.
  • Collaborate with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team to ensure accurate data collection and analysis.
  • Provide feedback to farmers based on survival data to improve tree care practices.

Farmer Engagement, Education and Contract signing:

  • Work directly with farmers to implement woodland management strategies, including tree planting, thinning, pruning, and pest management.
  • Advise farmers on effective plantation maintenance, such as weed management and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ensure farmers understand and sign contracts, emphasizing the benefits of working with Kijani Forestry.

Coordination and Community Engagement:

  • Collaborate with local authorities, communities, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable forestry practices and increase community participation.
  • Identify opportunities for community engagement in tree planting initiatives and support efforts to mobilize farmer groups.
  • Support the Plantation Growth Officer in identifying outstanding farmers for recognition or to serve as demonstration sites.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and documentation related to plantation activities, including progress reports, survival data, and survey findings.
  • Submit timely reports on plantation progress and ensure proper accountability for resources used in plantation activities.
  • Collaborate with the M&E team to conduct survival checks and forest surveys.

Compliance and Environmental Protection:

  • Ensure all plantation activities comply with environmental standards and regulations, including those related to fire safety and resource utilization.
  • Manage forest operations such as timber harvesting and regeneration, coordinating with teams to maintain environmental integrity.

Key Performance Indicators (KPls)

  • Plantation Quality: Number of plantations meeting the required quality standards.
  • Farmer Engagement: Number of farmers remobilized to plant additional trees and sign contracts.
  • Tree Survival Rates: Accurate and timely collection of tree survival data.
  • Service Demand: Number of groups requesting further Kijani services.
  • Reporting: Timely submission of reports and accurate record-keeping.
  • Resource Management: Proper accountability and documentation of resource usage.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma in Natural Sciences, community development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in plantation management, silviculture, or agricultural operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with farmers and local communities. l Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection, documentation, and reporting.
