Position Title: Research Intern
Organization: Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)
Reports To: Research officer
Duration: 6 months
Start Date: Immediate

1.0. About The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)

GAYO is a youth-led gender-balanced Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that advocates for environmental sustainability and community development. Founded in 2014 in Ghana, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating and building the capacity of different stakeholders to adopt sustainable environmental practices that satisfy the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to have a good quality of life. As part of the Green Africa Youth Organization’s aim to expand across other African countries, we have established the GAYO in Uganda office to advance the mission of researching to provide solutions to pressing environmental issues through youth empowerment and public education. To achieve its objective, GAYO works with various institutions and multiple levels of governance to implement climate change, circular economy and disaster risk reduction projects within communities.

2.0. Position description

As part of the Green Africa Youth Organization’s aim to expand across other African countries, we have established the GAYO in Uganda office to advance the mission of researching to provide solutions to pressing environmental issues through youth empowerment and public education. “The primary responsibility of this role is to support the research officer to conduct various studies on topics of the organization’s interest. This portfolio will entail conducting baselines surveys, developing research tools, engaging stakeholders, data analysis, writing research papers and other activities embedded within the research programs of the organization. The Research Intern will report directly to the Research officer.

3.0. Position roles and Responsibilities

The Research intern will largely support the research team in:

  • Designing Research Projects: Support research that aligns with GAYO’s goals.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct surveys, interviews, and statistical evaluations.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Draft reports, policy briefs, and presentations.
  • Collaboration: Assess GAYO’s works across the three tracks (Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, and Circular Economy) to  integrate findings into publications and actionable programs.

4.0. Minimum qualification: Currently enrolled in the final year or a recent graduate of a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental studies, Social Sciences, Climate Change or a related discipline.

5.0.  Requirements

  • Good knowledge of key national and international institutions, conventions and agreements related to climate change, environmental sustainability and waste management.
  • Excellent research skills, including conducting literature reviews and quantitative and qualitative data analyses.
  • Strong enthusiasm in people-centered research..
  • Good communication skills, planning, coordination and reporting, and expectation management.
  • Familiarity with virtual working tools including Zoom, Teams, Google Docs, and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of spatial survey software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS), and statistical tools and software (e.g. Kobotoolbox, SPSS, Stata, R) for data collection and analysis.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision with timely execution of tasks.

6.0.  Terms and Conditions

  • This is a hybrid role. The selected applicant will be required to report to the GAYO Offices in Kampala at least thrice a week. This frequency may increase with increase in tasks.
  • The intern is expected to dedicate at least 8 hours per day (40 hours per week) to GAYO work.
  • A monthly stipend of UGX 200,000 will be given
  • The working language is English. Knowledge of local languages is desirable as our work is also conducted within the local communities in Uganda.
