Job Description


Grindrod Logistics Africa – the leader in cross-border and project logistics, operating from offices in all major transit corridors in Southern and East Africa – has recently opened offices in Uganda. Our commitment to forging new routes and delivering Africa’s commodities to the world is unwavering and we have recently completed the construction of a ship, the MV Mpungu which will be transporting goods across Lake Victoria. Our staff are in place in Kampala, Uganda and Mwanza, Tanzania as well as on board the Ship.

We require the services of a Human Resources Officer, the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in overseeing various HR functions, including administration, recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and compliance with legislation. The HR Officer will play a crucial role in fostering a positive workplace culture and ensuring that the organisation attracts, develops, and retains top talent.

The responsibilities will include:

HR Administration & Payroll

  • Collate, administer, and facilitate the delivery of Payroll/Benefits documentation, and ensure that the relevant submission deadlines are met, ensuring all processes are in place. Induction of all new employees. Ensuring that organograms are updated and maintained. Resolve staff queries as efficiently as possible. Complete contracts of employment. Guide the East African Managers in respect of applicable legislation. Ensure all visa’s and work permits are in place.

Recruitment

  • Action all recruitment according to procedures and policy in place. Coordinating the full recruitment process, including advertising, screening, interviewing, and onboarding of new employees. Collaborate with department heads to identify staffing needs and develop job descriptions

Training and Development.

  • Coordinating all training and development including planning and delivering training as needed. Record and report on all training conducted.

Employee relations

  • Ensure employee engagement including interpreting and applying employment law and disciplinary action processes. Ensuring the onboarding and exit process is efficient and well managed. Advising managers on disciplinary processes. Ensure that disciplinary and incapacity processes are closed within a reasonable time frame. Ensures transgressions are escalated to the HR Manager for advice.

Performance Management

  • Support, track and co-ordinate the performance management system, monitor progress and follow up throughout the year to ensure that the relevant timelines are adhered to. Assist in performance management processes

Compliance

  • Ensure all internal policies, rules and procedures and various labour legislation are complied with for both Uganda and Tanzania.

Employee Wellness

  • Create a workspace that has regular elements of fun. Minimising workplace stress.

The Requirements will include:

Qualification

  • HR degree or equivalent
  • Computer Literacy
  • Driver’s license and reliable transport
  • MS Office – Specifically Outlook and Excel

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an HR Officer role
  • Payroll, recruitment, training, performance management and employee relations experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in logistics with some knowledge of maritime requirements.

Skills

  • Ability to work methodically, accurately, neatly, and process-driven
  • Able to meet deadlines, the ability to juggle multiple tasks and to priorities workload
  • Strictly confidential and ethical nature
  • Strong communication skills, negotiation skills and written ability
  • Excellent administration skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work on spreadsheets and manage data
  • Proficient in MS-Office (MS-Excel intermediary level)
  • Good interpersonal and co-ordination skills – ability to form working relationships with people at all levels
  • Able to work independently
  • The ability to work under pressure and good time management skills
  • Solid understanding of HR best practices and Labour Law
