Job Description


The British Council is hiring a Marketing and Communications Intern to support with the British Council Sudan and British Council Uganda teams in promoting their profile, events, products and services to internal and external audiences and stakeholders. Each country and context will have their own unique challenges and the internship will give the postholder a unique insight across all operational and programme areas, as well as insight into working with different audience and stakeholder groups in a local, regional and international context. Role will include:

Role purpose

The internship is positioned to support interns from marginalised backgrounds to gain essential skills and experiences to aid them in securing gainful employment and support their upward social mobility. The initiative is aimed at British Council’s contribution to social value.

Main Accountabilities

Asset Development And Planning

  • Joining programme team meetings in Uganda and Sudan to understand priorities, identify upcoming events and products/services promotional opportunities, audit existing library of assets and build a calendar of events to keep track of activity..
  • Develop compelling copy and visual assets such as social media content (posts), impact stories from programme activities and summary documents for stakeholder engagement.

Social Media And Website

  • Maintain social media activity, including creating, uploading and sharing proposed content with the designated Marketing Managers and liaising with the hub team for posting via the content tool (Airtable)./.
  • Track social media campaigns (where relevant) and compile engagement analytics.
  • Support relevant digital campaigns in both countries, including identifying opportunities to highlight impact stories, case studies and spotlight existing and new materials.

Event Support

  • Help plan and promote online and in-person events, such as webinars.
  • Prepare event materials where required (such as flyers and name badges).
  • Assist with logistics and support event delivery as needed.

Market Research

  • Conduct basic research on competitors.

Administrative And Coordination Tasks

  • Maintain marketing databases (mailing lists, media
  •  contacts, etc.).
  • Update reports, calendars, and content publication schedules.
  • Support the coordination of internal communications within the team.

Brand And Reputation Monitoring

  • Track media mentions, press coverage, and online sentiment about the organisation.

Collaboration And Learning

  • Liaise with other departments to gather information for campaigns and projects and identify opportunities for internal promotion/showcasing.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas for new campaigns.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in digital marketing and communications.

The skills we hope you will develop and grow through the role are:

  • Practical experience in copyrighting, content creation, brand management and supporting marcomms strategy and campaign design/delivery at a local, national and international level with different audiences.
  • Prioritisation and time management.
  • Intercultural insight and knowledge, working with different country and regional audiences and with their own respective needs.
  • Understanding of global organisation and ways of working, including frameworks and policies that guide best practice.
  • Stakeholder engagement, working to realise the ambition of Programme and Country leadership teams.

Candidates are expected to have researched whether they have the right to live and work in the country in which the role is based. Given that our offices have different legal status depending on the work we do in those countries, we recommend that you contact HR in country for additional information on the likelihood of securing a visa. Only at its discretion will the British Council provide support so please check first whether visa support is offered.

Language Requirements

English

Arabic would be a benefit, but is not necessary.
