JOB OPPORTUNITY: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Summary about Aridland Development Programme (ADP)
Arid-land Development Programme (ADP) is a Community based Christian Organization started in 2004 and acquired the status of an NGO in April 2008. ADP’s goal is to empower people to stimulate transformation through holistic development approach.
To achieve this goal, ADP identified three thematic area, which include:
• Direct Poverty Reduction (DPR)
• Policy Influencing (PI)
• Civil Society Strengthening (CSS)
ADP now intends to boost business development wing in the area by creating an autonomous and self-sustaining Rural Transformation Centre (RTC). This constitutes the rationale for creating this position of the Business Development Manager.
PURPOSE
• The Business Development Manager is the Senior Management Officer of the RTC and is responsible for leading an effective and cohesive business wing of ADP.
• The Business Development Manager works with and is accountable to the Board, reporting through the Executive Director.
• The Business Development Manager is responsible for the overall leadership and management of operational and administrative functions of the RTC.
• The Business Development Manager supports the Board and to define the RTC strategic vision and is accountable for its implementation and results.
• The Business Development Manager works with the Board to set the tone of the RTC’s ethical and operational standards, in line with the long-term strategic objectives and vision.
• The Business Development Manager is the main spokesperson for the RTC within the policies and objectives agreed by the Board.
• The Business Development Manager has a key role and is responsible for promoting viable investments within RTC. .
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Board Liaison, Strategy, Business Development and Operational Management
The Business Development Manager will:
• Develop business strategies for the RTC in accordance with its mission and vision as a business enterprise and subsidiary of ADP.
• Develop 2-year business plan and annual operational budget to execute the business strategies.
• Implement the business plans on budget and on time.
• Provide strategic advice to set up and continuously improve the RTC’s performance to the Business Steering Committee.
• Develop systems and organize business development meetings on a quarterly basis
• Develop RTC’s monthly, quarterly and annual financial and operational reports and present them to the subcommittee of the board for approval.
• Develop operational policies, present them for approval by board, and implement within the limitations of the laws of the Republic of Uganda.
• Communicate and maintain relationships based on trust and integrity with shareholders, business partners and regulatory authorities.
• Oversee RTC’s financial performance, investments and other business ventures and recommend opportunities for continued growth to the Board for approval.
• Report to the business Committee of ADP on the progress made against strategic plan, annual business plan and objectives.
Risk Management
The Business Development Manager is to:
• Identify and assess potential operational, financial and business risks to the RTC
• Actively implement measures to reduce and mitigate these risks, reporting to the Board on progress made.
Human Resources
The Business Development Manager will:
8. Manage and oversee the overall RTC business structure, to ensure effective management and development according to work plans.
9. Advise the Board on HR needs and lead the recruitment, training, motivation, retention and HR deployment for the RTC
10. Develop and present for approval a framework for managing human resources of the RTC; including key performance indicators (KPIs) for staff, HR policies and manuals.
11. Implement the framework for a systematic operation of the RTC,
12. Lead by example, delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of employees providing guidance and motivation to drive maximum performance and profit
13. Provide guidance on attracting, retaining and motivating resources to fulfil the strategic objectives.
Thought leadership
14. Provide thought leadership on how to maximize the impact of the RTC on business operations for beneficiaries such as the small holder farmers.
15. Support Board in fundraising and management of both grants and loans.
16. Build and maintain effective business alliances as part of a profitable partnership with associated bodies, partners and agencies. Internal Systems
17. The Business Development Manager will ensure the adequate provision and development of systems for business information management. This includes adequate control, processing and disclosure covering the RTC business data and communications activities, and that these are aligned to any legal and regulatory requirements both directly and through the work that the RTC undertakes.
Financial Management
The Business Development Manager will:
18. Develop, improve on and strengthen the financial systems of the RTC to high levels of integrity, transparency, instant reporting and confidence by Board.
19. Set finance performance targets for finance teams and manage the operations of the department to achieve the targets.
20. Constantly develop opportunities for diversifying the investments of the RTC’s funds in a manner that guarantees greatest returns.
21. Oversee and advance the development of new funding streams for the company, including broadening and developing sponsorship and other revenue generating strategies. Chair and Board The Business Development Manager will:
• Ensure an effective, open and transparent working relationship with the Chair (Business development Director of ADP) and the board Meet with the Director to set targets and review past performance against previous targets and strategic progress against objectives and goals.
• Ensure that business committee members of the RTC are provided in a timely fashion all information and access to management information necessary to fulfil their statutory obligations.
• Report to the Boards on strategic, operational, administrative, policy and financial aspects of the organization at Board meetings as the Senior Management Officer of the RTC.
• Ensure timely and effective distribution of all materials, according to policies and procedures, and communicate relevant Board decisions to RTC staff and (any) shareholders.
PERFORMANCE REVIEW OF THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
• The Executive Director must carry out an annual evaluation of the Business Development Manager performance and share with the chairperson Boards.
• The ED will consider the results of the annual evaluation of the Business Development Manager performance, amongst other factors, when setting his/her remuneration or bonus rewards.
Knowledge, skills and experience required
The role requires:
1. Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related course.
2. A proven record of managing a business with at least UGX 50 Million in annual turn over.
3. Good knowledge with good network of clients, partners and suppliers.
4. Demonstrable experience in developing business strategies, business plans and annual operating budgets.
5. Thorough knowledge of the target market of the RTC and ability to grow market share.
6. Strong understanding of corporate finance and measures of performance
7. An understanding of financial management and wider management principles and techniques.
8. Political and presentational skills with an appreciation of the demands of conflicting interests and of meeting statutory requirements.
9. Ability to manage dynamic teams to deliver high growth performance for a growing business and Centre.
10. Good leadership skills and excellent communication skills.
11. Excellent organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving skills.

PERFORMANCE TARGETS
• Grow Net profit margins by at least 10% annually.
• Achieve cash-cycle of 6 days maximum.
• Maintain at least cash conversion rate of 1.
WORKING TIME
Time: 08:00am – 05:00pm Monday to Friday and 09.00am – 1.00pm Saturdays
Annual leave : 2.5 days per month
Contract period : Initially 2 years, renewable
Station: Abim with some field/business travels
