Job Description


Makerere University Health Services has been in operation since 1978 to serve the staff and students of the university community. Since 2018, it is under the management of the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. It provides both preventive and curative services including out-patient care, in-patient care, diagnostic radiological and laboratory services, minor surgeries, specialist nursing services, sports medicine and physiotherapy, optometry, ENT, dental, non-communicable diseases care, HIV care and pharmacy services. Purpose of the job
To lead the establishment of pharmaceutical care services and manage the procurement planning, ordering, safe storage, distribution and appropriate use of health commodities including medicines, health supplies, medical devices, medical equipment, vaccines and laboratory supplies in the hospital.

Key Duties and responsibilities
• Maintain existing pharmacy services and establish new ones in accordance with policies and guidelines of the Ministry of Health
• Participate in planning and budgeting for pharmacy activities. This includes preparation of periodic procurement plans and budgets.
• Ensure timely and appropriate ordering/requisition of pharmaceutical supplies for the hospital
• Ensure appropriate and safe storage and control of all pharmaceutical supplies in the hospital. This includes cold chain management and maintaining appropriate stock levels at all times.
• Ensure that the hospital’s pharmaceutical supplies in the pharmacy as well as in other units of the hospital are accounted for. This includes maintenance of inventory management system (both hard copy and electronic)
• Develop, update and enforce SOPs for the pharmacy department in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.
• Provide professional advice to clinicians and other health professionals about use of pharmaceutical supplies in the hospital.
• Prepare periodic reports about pharmaceutical services in the hospital and submit them to the supervisor.
• Support and participate in service delivery research and training.
• Supervise and monitor performance of pharmacy staff.
• Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor

Key outputs
• Pharmaceutical services such as medication therapy management, monitoring adverse drug reactions, promoting adherence to treatment guidelines and treatment regimens are established
• Procurement plans and budget for pharmacy activities produced
• Pharmaceutical supplies requisitioned from warehouses
• Medicines properly stored
• Adequate medicines supply levels monitored and maintained
• Accountability for financial and other resources provided
• SOPs developed and reviewed
• Pharmacy staff supervised and appraised
• Professional advice provided to clinicians and other health Professionals
• Periodic reports prepared and submitted with supervisor

Qualifications Experience and Skills Qualification:
• Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or its equivalent
• Must be registered by the Pharmacy Board and possess a valid annual membership certificate from the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda
• Experience: should have 3 years relevant working Experience in pharmaceutical sector in Uganda

Competences
• Languages: Able to communicate effectively (written, oral, presentation) in English
• Skills: Microsoft Office applications, attention to detail, team work, leadership
• Competencies: Knowledge of inventory management systems such as Resolution is an added advantage, relevant hospital pharmacy services for Uganda.
