Position Title: BLOOM Agronomist
Duty Station: Over 80% time will consist of field work in different Ugandan region. Head Office is in Kampala
Duration: Permanent contract

Organizational Setting

In line with the above, Ibero Uganda Ltd. has set up its BLOOM department, as the sustainable buying strategy for Ibero Uganda. The Farmer Services Unit belongs to the BLOOM department, with the view to improve access to fertilizer input for coffee growing farmers in Uganda. The objective is to improve farmers’ livelihood through boosting coffee production and better integration of coffee farmers in the coffee export value chain. In order to become closer to the farmers, and to buy more volumes of coffee, Ibero Uganda has decided to reinforce the agronomical advises to be given to the farmers and farmers’ groups.
Reporting Lines
The Kasese Quality Controller reports to both the Kasese Business Development Officer and to the Head Office Quality Controller.
Key responsibilities
• Train the field team (70+ staff) in good agronomical practices for coffee. Most of the field team is based in robusta growing areas, but there is also a part in arabica growing area.
• Support the field team in training farmers’ groups and coffee smallholders in Good Agricultural Practices
• Support the field team in identifying pest and disease attacks and adequately advise on fighting those
• Support the field team with their agronomical trainings to farmers in general, and with their specific targets (rejuvenation programme, etc.)
• Propose innovations to better perform
Preferred qualifications
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in coffee (preferably in both arabica and robusta) and professional experience in trainings
• Technical Diploma and/or Degree in agricultural science, preferably with a specialty in coffee
• Excellent agronomical coffee knowledge on arabica and robusta, including (but not limited to) ability to recognize pest and disease on coffee trees, ability to solve coffee trees problems and advise towards yield increase, ability to advise on trees rejuvenation and on tree new plantation, etc.
• Ability to train a field team with no or little agronomical knowledge so they can in turn advise coffee smallholders on their crops.
• Ability to train coffee smallholders.
• Willingness to work in coffee farms over 80% of the time, and to move frequently in the different regions where Ibero works with coffee smallholders.
• Ability to work under pressure and close late where necessary.
• Ability to work under minimum supervision.
• Ability to be a good team player.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
• Fluent in English. Luganda is an asset, Lukonzo as well.
• Ability to use various technologies.
