The USAID-Uganda Biodiversity for Resilience project is a $15 million, five-year cooperative agreement that seeks to assist communities, the Government of Uganda, and the private sector to conserve and manage biodiversity in target ecosystems for lasting environmental and economic sustainability and increased community and household resilience
Job Summary:
The Conservation Enterprise Development Specialist supports the USAID Uganda Biodiversity for Resilience (B4R) Activity’s Private Sector Engagement/Business Development Advisor with development of medium, small, and micro (MSMEs) conservation enterprises, private sector engagement, market linkages, and business development. The Conservation Enterprise Development Specialist provides support to the Private Sector Engagement/Business Development Advisor for activities that cover identification of potential products and services, value addition, quality assurance, and linkages to broader markets for conservation friendly products and services. The Conservation Enterprise Development Specialist works closely with protected area (PA) managers, communities adjacent to PAs, conservancy governance and business management bodies, entrepreneurs, investors, relevant partners, and the Government of Uganda (GOU) to enhance and engage private sector development and investment in targeted field sites.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the Private Sector Engagement/Business Development Advisor
- Helps create or formalize existing/nascent conservation MSMEs, including tourism enterprises
- Travels to targeted PAs and coordinates and collaborates closely with PA managers, communities adjacent to PAs, and conservancy governance agencies
- Liaises and collaborates with business management bodies, entrepreneurs, investors, relevant partners, and the GOU to enhance and engage private sector development and investment
- Participates in the B4R cross-Outcome Community and Private Sector Partnerships Working Group
- Identifies possible funders, investors, and recipients of B4R’s Strategic Investment Fund (SIF)
- Identifies sources of funding toward B4R’s required cost share; assists B4R’s SIF Manager secure the required receipts and documentation for submission to USAID
- Supports achievement of B4R private sector engagement outcomes, outputs, and indicators as follows:
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the Conservation Enterprise Development Specialist job must hold a Bachelor’s degree in business, economic development, tourism, conservation, or related field; Master’s preferred
- 10+ years of experience in environmental conservation, Considerable working experience in Africa and/or with conservation enterprise programs preferred
- Experience with private sector engagement, ecotourism, business planning processes
- Fluency in English required
