Job Description


Uganda Breweries Ltd is a company incorporated in Uganda. The majority shareholder in UBL is East Africa Breweries Limited (“EABL”), which is in turn majority owned by Diageo Plc. UBL, which is a licensed manufacturer and wholesaler of adult beverages operates in a very competitive environment. UBL’s ambition is to be the best performing, most trusted and respected company in Uganda. The business, which in 2019 was listed as Uganda’s 6th largest taxpayer employs (directly and indirectly) and estimated 22,000 Ugandans, 17,000 of whom are farmers. UBL is part of a self-regulating industry although with the passing of the Alcohol Control policy by cabinet in September 2019, an Alcohol Control Act is expected soon.

The role is primarily concerned with custodianship of the Corporate Brand reputation and protecting the business’ license to operate. The role reports directly to the Managing Director but has additional reporting lines to the EABL Corporate Relations (“CR”) Lead and the Diageo Africa Corporate Relations Director. The role holder is also a member of the local Management/ Executive Team and the Extended Leadership Team for EABL as well as the Africa CR Leadership Team.

Dimensions
Financial

Member of UBL Executive team accountable for delivering total business performance outcomes.

Manage critical tax, excise and regulatory challenges/opportunities, many of which have a material impact on the financial performance of UBL and any subsidiaries of UBL oversees.

Accountable for the Corporate Relations Budget.

Create discontinuous/ unconventional opportunities for UBL’s products/ brands to thrive and grow e.g. disruption and recruitment from illicit and counterfeit.

Market Complexity

The Corporate Relations Director’s role is a critical one, especially given the challenges in the regulatory and policy landscape which includes on-going dialogue in relation to (for example) alcohol regulation, environmental compliance, plastics waste and tax issues in Uganda. Complexity is further enhanced though the blend of cultural/tribal/traditional leadership structures as well as political. In addition, UBL in party of a very competitive and dynamic beverage market across all sectors requiring diligent stakeholder and issue management through complex industry and regulatory frameworks.

Functional Capabilities

  • As a member of the Management/ Executive team be able to provide strategic oversight, create opportunities for success and support execution of business plans.
  • Leads the delivery of the enriched in-country CR strategy aligned to the Diageo CR must do’s including Diageo in Society, Public Policy, Sustainability and Communications.
  • Visibly lead industry association engagement strategy – Uganda Alcohol Industry Association (UAIA), Uganda Manufacturers’ Association (UMA), Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) etc.
  • Custodian of key strategic relationships that play a central role in ensuring the business objectives are met and business positions are understood and upheld.
  • Will need to engage, coach and support Brand MD.
  • Shape the narrative and reputation of the Corporate Brand.

Purpose of Role

To protect and promote UBL’s reputation with its principal government, media and community stakeholders through the delivery of a robust Corporate Relations strategy in order to enable the delivery of the business’ strategic imperatives.

The role is also responsible for leading the development and delivery of enriched communities’ strategy with a focus on securing an equitable tax regime, promoting positive drinking and adopting projects that show UBL as being in community and for community.

  • Pro-active key stakeholder engagement to create and sustain the right environment for the business to thrive.
  • Shape policy and regulation to mitigate adverse impact to the business.
  • Manage reputation and business risk.
  • Lead and maintain best practice standards in Corporate Relations/ Affairs consistent with UBL’s strategy and values.
  • Build and create an effective and capable Corporate Relations Team.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • University Graduate with at least 10 years work experience, at least 5 of which must have been at a Senior level in Corporate Relations/ Affairs, Public Policy or a related field.
  • Corporate Relations experience in an FMCG or a highly regulated industry is an advantage.
  • Proven ability to work across markets and cultures is highly preferred and experience of working in an Africa context would be an advantage
  • Solid experience in managing public policy risks and stakeholder engagement is essential and (informal) leadership of industry bodies is desirable
  • Experience of developing focused strategies and implementation with limited resources and of working with and engaging management to deliver CR strategy
  • Experience in hands-on, live crisis management (incl. Media relations)
  • Strong relationship management and influencing skills
  • Proven and resourceful self-starter, with “can do, can learn, will find a solution “attitude
  • Excellent communication skills (employees, media, policy analysis and argumentation)
  • Good listener and open mindset, yet confident, driven and focused professional
  • Fluency in verbal and written English is essential

  • A dislike for or inability to operate in an ambiguous and self-regulating environment.
  • Inability or dislike for tight deadlines and high outcome-oriented business environment.
  • Inability to multi-task.
