Job Description
Overview
The “MV KALANGALA” is a modern multi-purpose marine vessel providing transport services between Kalangala District and the Mainland. The vessel meets International Standards and is fully Classed and Insured accordingly.
The MV Kalangala is managed and operated by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The Ministry of Works and Transport now wishes to employ qualified and experienced personnel on Contract basis to augment the services of the existing crew to efficiently operate the vessel. The posts on the “MV Kalangala” include the following:

Salary: Ug. Shs.800,000/= per month
Terms of Service: Local Contract appointment for twenty four (24)
Months Reports To: Chief Mechanical Engineer
Minimum Qualifications:
• Applicants should be a Ugandan holding a Uganda Certificate of Education, and at least a Certificate in Yatch and Boat building.
• Applicants should be in position to run the vessel with minimum supervision.
• Training in STCW mandatory courses including personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibilities, elementary first aid, fire prevention and fire fighting, security awareness, proficiency in survival craft (PSC) and rescue boats (RB).
Experience:
Practical knowledge of swimming and safety precautions plus experience in the relevant field is a MUST.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Coxswain will be in-charge of small boats in the Ministry and is reports to the Chief Mechanical Engineer for performing the following duties:
• Navigation and steering the support boat to MV Kalangala.
• Routine maintenance of Ministry boats.
• Operating the support boat during reconnaissance, accident investigations and search and rescue operations by the Ministry
• Plan for weather and consult authorities before embarking on a voyage.
• Supervise and give instructions to the crew.
• Communicate updates and safety information to passengers.
• Maintain boat logbooks.
• Transmit navigational information by telephone or marine radio.
• Moor and unmoor vessels.
• Use navigational tools and techniques.
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair vessel issues, including pump systems, diesel engines and propulsion systems
• Respond to and manage emergency situations.
• Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
