Overview
• The core purpose of the head teacher at Arlington Academy of Hope is to provide professional leadership and management for the school within the context of the Trust Deed. This will promote a secure foundation from which to achieve high standards in all areas of the school’s work at Arlington Academy of Hope.
• At Arlington Academy of Hope, a head teacher is the most senior teacher and leader of a school, responsible for the education of all pupils, management of staff, and for school policy making. Head teachers lead, motivate and manage staff by delegating responsibility, setting expectations and targets and evaluating staff performance against them at Arlington Academy of Hope.
About Arlington Academy of Hope Uganda
The Arlington Academy of Hope, (AAH Uganda) is found in Bududa in Eastern Uganda. We provide access to quality education, health care and community development in the three districts of: Bududa, Manafwa and Namisindwa. We run a model primary school, secondary school scholarships, and Outreach and Tertiary programs for over 800 students. We have two medical clinics which serve over 25,000 patients per year and various community development activities. We have over seventy employees plus volunteers both domestic and international.
Job description:
• Excellent Performance: The head teacher will set targets for teachers and students on how to attain 100% division as required by AAH organization in all classes. She/he will ensure that all stakeholders get involved on timely manner to help learners achieve highly in their academics. The head teacher will identify the required staff, with the right qualifications to deliver effective teaching following the curriculum designed by the ministry. She/he will be responsible for motivating both pupils and staff in order to realize the results.
• Attendance Rate: The head teacher shall be responsible in putting measures in place to have 100% attendance for staff and pupils each day. Pupils should show up in the classroom and effective teaching takes place in order to improve on pupils’ grades. He/she should fully be available to monitor the teachers’ daily attendance meaning the head teacher should be committed to the work on daily basis.
• Teacher satisfaction: the head teacher will take a lead role in hiring most experienced and qualified teachers for the job. This will be reflected at the teachers’ performance at the end of the year. The pupils’ scores in their respective classes should determine what kind of teacher was hired. The teachers hired should be able to help pupils succeed in their academics and discipline, the teachers who would see possibilities rather problems and they are willing to go an extra mile to perform other roles beyond their classroom.
• Timely monthly reports: AAH management and donors require timely monthly reports in order to seek for funding. A head teacher will always make a report/report that meet donor needs regularly or whenever required. Good reports may impress donors to provide additional funds for specific programs in the school. Timely submission of reports help the organization to raise funds locally and internationally to our partners. AAH is looking for a reputable head teacher who understands the value of reports, who believes in report making and submits them without pressure
• Maintaining of discipline: the head teacher will ensure that inappropriate pupil/teacher behavior is not allowed in the school. The head teacher is the overall supervisor for discipline. You will be required to conduct school wide professional development in this area and improve behavior management strategies. Incidents of misconduct shall be recorded and responded to appropriately. Learners and staff that have behavior management challenges shall be handled together with disciplinary committee.
• Technology Usage Among our key goals is ICT competence for pupils and staff. AAH seeks to transform both learners and teachers who must fit in modern technology. AAH has embraced technology at all levels should usage must monitor all the time. The teaching and learning is digitalized and the process should be supervised by the head teacher
• Role in Supervision: The head of a school should not simply sit in his office. He should supervise the work of the school here, there and everywhere. He should supervise instructional work. He may have a round of the class-rooms
Job requirements:
• Should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or a related degree.
• Five years of teaching experience within a large active and vibrant organisation with at least 3 of those years at leadership/administration level
• Computer literacy skills such as PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel and Access.
• Good team player, results oriented, self – motivated, able to work with minimum supervision and for long hours under extreme pressure
• Excellent Oral and Written communication skills
• A minimum of five GCSEs, including Maths and English (as well as Science for primary school teaching).
• Initial teacher training (ITT).
• Qualified teacher status (QTS).
• UNEB Examiner and author of different books
• Training in curriculum interpretation and implementation.
• Able to relate well with local and international visitors
