Job Description


Makerere University Health Services has been in operation since 1978 to serve the staff and students of the university community. Since 2018, it is under the management of the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. It provides both preventive and curative services including out-patient care, in-patient care, diagnostic radiological and laboratory services, minor surgeries, specialist nursing services, sports medicine and physiotherapy, optometry, ENT, dental, non-communicable diseases care, HIV care and pharmacy services. The hospital seeks to be a leading healthcare organization, nationally and internationally, improving health outcomes through research, training, collaboration and innovation’. The hospital wishes to recruit suitable persons to fill the following vacancies: .

Position: Optometrist:
Salary Gross Pay: Attractive
Terms of employment: Contract
Reports to: Director – University Health Services

Key Duties and responsibilities
• Investigating and examining the eye and adnexa, and associated systemic factors, to detect, diagnose and appropriately manage disease
• Providing refractive and low vision care
• Conducting binocular vision assessment and contact lens fitting
• Managing the various aspects of optometric services and practices
• Promoting preventative measures to promote good ocular health
• Developing and maintaining eye care and awareness programs
• Conducting operational research

Key outputs
• Eye and adnexa investigated and examined;
• Refractive and low vision care provided;
• Binocular vision assessment and contact lens fitting conducted;
• Optometry practices and services managed
• Good ocular health promoted;
• Eye care and awareness programs developed and maintained;
• Operational research conducted

Person specification
s Qualifications
• A Bachelor of Science in Optometry or its equivalent from a recognized University/Institution.
• Must be registered with Allied Health Professional Council and holds a valid practicing license
• Experience: No previous working Experience is required.
