Location: Head Office (Kitemu, Nsangi, Kyengera Town Council, Kivu Road, Kampala, Uganda)

Job Summary:

The Production Lead at Jolems Investments Limited is accountable for overseeing the daily operations within their assigned production area, ensuring that production targets are met efficiently and effectively while maintaining high-quality standards and a safe working environment. This critical role involves managing production staff, coordinating workflows, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and actively contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. The Production Lead is instrumental in addressing Jolems’ ongoing challenges related to meeting production demands, ensuring product quality, optimizing resource utilization, and fostering a culture of accountability and professionalism within the production teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision and Team Management:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of production staff, which may include Machine Operators, Packers, and Process Workers.
  • Provide clear direction, training, and coaching to team members to ensure they are competent in their roles and understand their responsibilities.
  • Monitor staff performance, provide feedback, and address any performance issues in a professional and timely manner.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that emphasizes teamwork and accountability.

Production Planning and Execution:

  • Implement production schedules and ensure that production targets are met according to customer demand and company objectives.
  • Monitor production processes to ensure efficiency, quality, and adherence to established procedures.
  • Ensure the efficient use of resources, including raw materials, equipment, and personnel, to minimize waste and maximize productivity.
  • Maintain accurate production records, including daily output, quality checks, and any deviations from standards, and prepare daily production reports.

Quality Control:

  • Monitor and enforce quality standards throughout the production process.
  • Conduct regular quality checks of work-in-progress and finished products.
  • Identify and report any quality issues or non-conformances to the Quality Control and Assurance Officer and participate in implementing corrective actions.
  • Ensure that Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and hygiene standards are consistently followed by all production staff.

Safety and Environment:

  • Enforce all safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all production staff.
  • Identify and report any potential hazards or unsafe conditions to the Production Manager and the Quality, Environment, and Safety Officer.
  • Ensure that all production staff use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Promote environmental awareness and ensure adherence to environmental procedures within the production area.

Equipment and Maintenance:

  • Ensure the proper operation and basic maintenance of production machinery.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to the Production Manager or designated maintenance personnel.
  • Follow maintenance schedules and procedures as directed.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with the Quality Control and Assurance Officer to address quality issues and implement improvements.
  • Coordinate with the Production Manager regarding production status, challenges, and improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain professional communication with all team members and other departments.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify areas for process improvement to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve product quality.
  • Participate in lean manufacturing practices implementation.
  • Contribute to the development and review of SOPs and work instructions.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education: Diploma or vocational training in a relevant field (e.g., Manufacturing, Food Science, Engineering) or equivalent practical experience.

Experience: Proven experience (minimum of 2-3 years) in a supervisory role within a manufacturing or production environment, preferably in the food industry.

Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of production processes, quality control principles, and safety procedures. Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and hygiene standards (e.g., ISO 22000, HACCP principles if applicable). Basic understanding of hazard identification and safety risk management.

Leadership and Management: Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.

Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Documentation: Ability to read and interpret production schedules, SOPs, and quality standards, and basic computer literacy for record-keeping and reporting.

Work Ethic: Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing production demands.

Performance Indicators:

  • Achievement of production volume targets.
  • Maintenance of product quality standards (e.g., defect rates, positive quality checks, customer feedback).
  • Efficiency in resource utilization (e.g., raw material yield, labor productivity).
  • Adherence to production schedules and timely delivery.
  • Implementation of process improvements and efficiency gains.
  • Compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Effective team leadership and employee performance.
  • Accurate and timely reporting of production data.
