Position Title: Programs Intern (Youth Climate Council)

Organization: Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)
Location: Kampala
Reports To: YCC Coordinator
Duration: 6 months
Start Date: Immediate

Background

1.0. About GAYO and Youth Climate Council

The Youth Climate Council Uganda (YCC) is an institutional mechanism for the youth climate movement  in the Global South, providing an avenue for youth-led organizations, individuals, and the general public to  meaningfully participate in climate-related decision-making processes through equitable access and  inclusion to decision-making spaces. The Youth Climate Council in Uganda was launched on 30th June  2023 driven by the overarching mission of promoting activism in Uganda by fostering equitable efforts  among youth-led organizations and individual young activities by building their resilience to enhance  inclusive local engagement in Uganda climate policies. As such, the YCC in Uganda takes on a decentralized  structure (North, Eastern, Central and West) , with a strong regional representation to enhance equitable  access and engagement of Ugandan youth through policy processes. The Youth Climate Council in Uganda  is currently hosted by the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO-Uganda) and National Youth Council  of Uganda, which serves as its implementing organization.

2.0. Position description 

The Programs Intern will support and enhance YCC programs under the guidance of the YCC Coordinator. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and evaluating programs that align with the YCC’s mission and objectives. The intern will coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, manage program resources, and ensure effective delivery of activities and programs of the Youth Climate Council.

3.0. Position Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Development: Assist in designing and refining YCC programs to meet strategic objectives.

  • Implementation: Execute program activities in collaboration with regional teams and stakeholders.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Track program outcomes and impact, providing regular reports to the YCC Coordinator.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with youth-led organizations, government agencies, and civil society to foster partnerships and promote program alignment.

  • Resource Management: Support in managing budgetary allocations and logistics for program activities.

  • Capacity Building: Facilitate training sessions and workshops to build the capacity of youth participants in climate action and policy engagement.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive records of program activities, achievements, and challenges for organizational learning and reporting purposes.

  • Adherence to Policies and Procedures: Ensure compliance with organizational policies, guidelines, and donor requirements in program implementation.

4.0. Outputs/deliverables 

  • Execution of at least three YCC programs or initiatives aligned with the council’s objectives.
  • Coordination of activities across all four YCC regions (North, East, Central, and West).
  • Submission of detailed monthly program progress reports (achievements, challenges, lessons).
  • Development of an annual program performance report summarizing outcomes and impacts.
  • Facilitation of  capacity-building workshops or training sessions for youth participants.
  • Establishment or enhancement of partnerships with at least five new youth-led organizations, government entities, or civil society actors.
  • Creation of a stakeholder database documenting all partnerships engaged during the
    • internship period.
    • Integration of youth-led inputs into at least one national or local climate policy or strategy.
    • Development of a digital archive containing program documentation (activity reports, attendance lists, financial records).

    5.0. Qualifications and Skills:

    • Recent graduate of  environmental studies, development studies, social sciences, or a related field.

    • Passion for climate action and youth empowerment.

    • Strong organizational and communication skills.

    • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently, with attention to detail.

    • Proficiency in MS Office suite and familiarity with project management tools is an advantage.

    6.0.. Terms and Conditions  

    • The Contract is for one year
    • Working hours: 40 hours per week (Full time)
    • Working language: English
    • The Intern will receive a stipend of Uganda shillings. 200,000
