Job Description


The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is a semi-autonomous body established by an Act of Parliament (1998) to promote the production of reliable official statistics and ensure the development and maintenance of the National Statistical System.

The Bureau’s core business includes, among others, the production, coordination and dissemination of official statistics to support development processes at local and national government levels, including policy, planning, decision-making, monitoring and evaluation.

The Bureau is conducting work on the Uganda Information Platform for Nutrition (UNIPN) project. It is seeking to recruit exceptional and dynamic qualified Ugandan professional with high integrity and proven leadership skills, who are self-motivated and results oriented, to fill the position below;

Position: Public Health specialist (1)
Reports: Director professional Services
Scale: UBOS SP2
Type of appointment: Fixed Contract period of five months

Role:
• To undertake reviews of existing information derived from
reports, evaluations and research papers to help answer the questions posed by the NIPN advisory Committee.

Main duties and responsibilities:
• Undertake systematic reviews of the literature on topics related to efforts in all sectors to improve human nutrition; including health, agriculture, food security; water and sanitation, social protection and education.
• Search for and obtain copies of reports of policy documents, programme evaluations, reports and surveys conducted by any agency in Uganda that is of relevance to human nutrition;
• Search for and obtain copies of reports of evaluations, programmes and studies in other countries of relevance to the topic under review.
• Develop relationships with Development Partners, NGOs, and Universities and Research institutes in the fields of nutrition, agriculture, social protection, WASH and Education to receive the latest reports and documents of relevance to nutrition, thereby developing a network of key informants.
• Methodically search for databases such as PubMed, PubAg, AGRICOLA, AGRIS and any other database for papers and reports of relevance to the topic under review.
• Create an electronic archive of indexed reports and documents with support of the Data Manager so that they can be searched.
• Maintain a library of policy documents, reports and papers.
• Write reviews of what is known about specific issues derived from a thorough review of the national and international literature.
• Prepare presentations on the information found about the issue or question posed for analysis by the advisory committee.
• Meet the needs of Senior Advisors to the project for information and reports.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications:
• M.Sc. degree in Public Health, with B.Sc. in Nutrition or B.Sc. Public Health with M.Sc. in Nutrition Science.

• Required skills and Experience:
• Five years’ experience of work as a public health specialist, ideally with a strong interest in maternal and child nutrition or human nutrition
• Proven expertise in reviewing, analysing and summarizing grey and published literature; Ability to write reports, and experience in using MS Word, Excel and any other relevant computer applications.
• Examples of reports/papers written should be provided with the application.
