Job Description


The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is undertaking a longitudinal study to assess the media coverage of public affairs in Uganda. The purpose is to provide evidence that will inform advocacy and interventions intended to improve journalists’ reporting of public affairs. This media monitoring research will provide data through which gaps in and concerns about coverage are addressed to help improve media performance.

Specific Objectives

  1. To gather empirical evidence of the quantity, quality, frequency, scope, and nature of public affairs coverage by the Ugandan media.
  2. To explore what media coverage reveals about the broader discourse on public affairs in Uganda.
  3. To offer recommendations on how public affairs reporting can be improved in quantity and quality.
  4. To account for the patterns observed as well as the conditions that promote or hinder coverage of public affairs in Uganda.

 The position – Part-time research assistant

Will identify stories from select media platforms and enter data in an electronic system guided by a coding protocol.

 Reports to: Programme Officer, Research & Media Monitoring

Terms of reference

  • Participate in coder training and data validation sessions.
  • Identify public affairs stories using the coding protocol.
  • Enter data in an electronic system as appropriate.
  • Comply with data integrity and accuracy guidelines.

 Qualifications

Diploma or degree in Journalism, Communication or related field; demonstrated interest in media research or data analysis.  The ability to read and write in Acholi, Langi, Alur, Lugbara, Luganda and Ngakarimojong is desirable, but not essential.

Payment: Competitive and based on volume of work assigned and accomplished

Duration of assignment: January – December 2025
