Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: The incumbent will serve as the Research Manager for the Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP). The individual will serve under the immediate supervision of the Deputy Executive Director.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in Medicine & Surgery
• Masters degree in Clinical Medicine, Epidemiology, Public Health, or other Clinical Research related field
• Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification research experience.
• Experience in protocol development and successful grant writing
• Knowledge of the principles and strategies in research quality control and quality assurance.
• Strong leadership, communication and writing skills.
• Good interpersonal skills
• Fluency in verbal and written English
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordination with management in determining clinical trials, field trials, observational studies and implementation science research priorities and developing the research roadmap within the infectious diseases area.
• Development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of research projects.
• Supervise staff to complete research projects within deadlines developing appropriate solutions to arising challenges.
• Tracking progress of research projects and periodically report to management and sponsors as per sponsor requirements
• Working with finance and management in preparation of budgets and schedules for research budgets
• Working with the finance teams to effectively monitor and control expenses within allotted budgets.
• Working with internal teams to build scientific capacity through CMEs, grant writing, lobbying and networking
• Development, submission and implementation of grant proposals
• Development & implementation of Quality Management Plan
• Responsible for writing and coordinating abstracts and publications for conferences and/or scientific journals
• Presentations at scientific meetings (oral and/or poster)
• Mentoring staff in protocol development, writing abstracts and publication for conferences and/or scientific journal and presentation at scientific meetings
• Staying abreast with latest developments in infectious disease research.
• Ensuring that research deliverables meet quality standards and business requirements.
• Work closely with and communicate management decisions to key research stakeholders.
• Any other duties as assigned.

OTHER REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING:
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
• Ethics Training
• Biostatistics
• Knowledge of International and Ugandan Regulatory Procedures.
• Knowledge and experience of HIV/AIDS – prevention care, and treatment.
• Experience in budget development, review and tracking of expenses.
• Experience in the delivery and/or participation of continuing education sessions
• Experience and knowledge in grants proposal writing.
• PHYSICAL ABILITY: The ability to travel within the work site including Makerere University, Kampala as well as field sites in Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe Districts dependent on activities.
