Job Description
The “MV KALANGALA” is a modern multi-purpose marine vessel providing transport services between Kalangala District and the Mainland. The vessel meets International Standards and is fully Classed and Insured accordingly.
The MV Kalangala is managed and operated by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The Ministry of Works and Transport now wishes to employ qualified and experienced personnel on Contract basis to augment the services of the existing crew to efficiently operate the vessel. The posts on the “MV Kalangala” include the following:

Age: Not less than 25 years
Salary: Ug. Shs.2,101,000/= per month
Terms of Service: Local Contract appointment for twenty four (24) Months
Reports To: Chief Engineer
Minimum Qualifications:
• Must possess at least Uganda Certificate of Education or equivalent
• Must possess a Certificate of Proficiency for engine room watch or electro-technical rating from a recognized Institution
• Training in STCW mandatory courses including personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibilities, elementary first aid, fire prevention and fire fighting, security awareness, proficiency in survival craft (PSC) and rescue boats (RB).
Experience:
• Recorded sea-time of not less than 3 years, five of which MUST have been at the level of Third Engineer of a vessel not less than 50 GRT.
• Excellent written and spoken English skills.
• Physically fit and able to work for long hours in all weather conditions
• Experience with medium speed Caterpillar Marine Engines would be an added advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Second Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in up-keep of the engine room and performing maintenance of shipboard machinery including:
• Maintenance of all the engine room and deck machinery
• Making sure all the machineries and safety systems are working safely, efficiently and within the provided parameters
• Planning and implementing preventive maintenance systems (PMS) and carrying out breakdown maintenance (BMS) where necessary.
• Maintaining and regularly updating engine room records, including the log books for fuel or lube oil etc.
• Keeping and updating regularly inventory of all the spares for engine room machineries like pumps, auxiliary engine, etc. and storing them in accordance to government stores procedures.
• Conducting risk assessment, briefing and safety training of the entire engine crew, especially for the junior engineers and fresh crew.
• Operation and maintenance of life saving appliances and fire fighting appliances
• Oversee all the emergency machinery and equipment under SOLAS
• Keeping the engine room bilge clean of oil and oily water. All tank parameters are to be recorded for sludge and bilge system.
• Responsible for distributing and assigning duties to all the engine crew members and acts as supervisor to them.
