Job Description
Fairventures Worldwide (FVW) is a German based organization engaged in landscape restoration activities. Our Uganda program aims to find and implement solutions for large-scale restoration of deforested areas. FVW works with small scale farmers in Western Uganda to implement its reforestation programs. FVW approach to reforestation is through use of fast-growing indigenous tree species in agroforestry systems. FVW implements its programs through partnerships with local farmer groups and community entities for maximum impact and sustainability of projects.
Fairventures Worldwide is currently implementing the MTCEA (Mass Timber Construction East Africa) project supported by the Audemar Piguet Foundation from Switzerland, to develop the value chain of fast growing native timber species in Uganda. The organization is currently seeking to appoint a Wood Engineer to support the Project Manager MTCEA in implementing the project activities
Job Summary:
The Wood Engineer shall provide support in the project implementation with helping doing
research about different timber species, the timber industry and the timber construction sector in Uganda.
He/She shall help in the planning and implementation of Mass Timber construction showcases to promote timber in the construction sector.
Job Roles and Responsibilities:
The Wood Engineer shall;
• Build up Database about local timber species planted from fairventures worldwide in
• Uganda
• Collecting samples of these different timber species in Uganda
• Support carpentry works in the workshop
• Mechanical testing and anatomical analyses for different tree species
• Establishment of tree species database
• Conduct mass timber value chain analysis for Uganda
• Run/support product analysis and market research for timber products
• Support financial analysis (investments, material costs, revenue streams)
• Devise glulam enterprise administration, sales/marketing management plans
• Support in the planning of the timber construction showcase (drawings / design / building materials etc..)
• Contribute to sharing and learning about wooden structures
• Assist in conducting awareness of Mass Timber Products like Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber)
• Support in writing reports for the funders.
Education and Experience /Preferred Qualifications:
• A minimum of a Diploma in Wood Engineering /Wood Works from a nationally recognised institution. A degree in these fields is an added advantage.
• At least 3 years of professional work experience in the timber or wood construction industry/workshop.
• Interested in working in an international team with timber experts from all over the world and open to exchange and learn from other people and cultures.
• Ability to work in a team and to sometimes tight deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment
• Proficient in use of computer applications related to the tasks and ability like creating databases, analysis and presentations of the research.
• Field visits and visits of timber yards, construction sites, workshops play a large part in this role; as such, it is expected that the successful candidate shall be willing and able to take part in such activities as and when needed and sometimes with short notice.
Required/Desired Language:
English, any dialect of Runyakitara (Runyankore/Rukiga/Runyoro/Rutooro) and Luganda
