Job Description


Contract Type: Fixed Term
Location: Imvepi Refugee Settlement (50%) and Arua (50%)
Reports to: Food Security & Livelihood Project Officer

Job Purpose:
The Agriculture Field Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Food Security & Livelihood Project Officer in planning and implementing agricultural activities for the organization’s projects. Reporting to the Food Security & Livelihood Officer, the Agriculture Field Assistant provides technical guidance and training to farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improved productivity.

Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Assist in Program Planning: Collaborate with the Food Security & Livelihood Officer in developing comprehensive plans for agricultural activities in alignment with the organization’s goals.
2. Training and Capacity Building: Conduct training sessions for farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, organic techniques, and Climate smart farming technologies to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Farming Inputs Support: Provide support to farmers in the proper use and application of agricultural inputs, such as seeds, organic fertilizers, and pesticides, ensuring effective utilization.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor the progress of farmers’ agricultural activities, collect relevant data, and assess outcomes to measure the impact of interventions.
Pest and Disease Management: Offer guidance on organic pest and disease management strategies, implementing measures to minimize losses and enhance crop health.
6. Irrigation and Water Management: Provide technical advice on proper irrigation practices and water management techniques to optimize crop yields.
7. Soil Fertility Improvement: Assist farmers in soil testing and recommend appropriate soil fertility improvement measures to enhance agricultural productivity sustainably.
8. Farmer Field Days and Knowledge Sharing Events: Collaborate in organizing farmer field days, knowledge sharing events, and demonstration plots to showcase best practices and encourage peer learning.
9. Data Collection and Reporting: Collect relevant data and prepare timely reports on agricultural activities, including progress, challenges, and success stories.
10. Collaboration and Liaison: Work closely with the Food Security & Livelihood Officer and other team members to ensure smooth coordination and collaboration in project implementation.
11. Community Engagement: Engage with the local community, promoting the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices and raising awareness of the organization’s initiatives.
12. Perform Assigned Duties: Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Food Security & Livelihood Officer to support the success of agricultural programs.

Qualifications and Competencies:
• Bachelor’s degree/diploma/Certificate in Agriculture, Agronomy, Environmental Science or related field. Other relevant trainings and certifications will be an added advantage
• Minimum 3 years of practical experience in agricultural extension or community-based agricultural projects.
• Proficiency in delivering training sessions and capacity building for farmers.
• Knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices, organic farming techniques, and climate smart agricultural technologies.
• Experience working in a refugee settlement setting will be of an added advantage.
• Understanding of organic pest and disease management, soil and water conservation and organic soil fertility improvement methods.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with farmers and stakeholders.
• Strong organizational and data collection abilities.
• Ability to work in a team and independently with minimal supervision.
• Passion for sustainable agriculture and commitment to community development.
• Fluency in local languages spoken in the area is an advantage.
