Background

World Vision Uganda (WVU) is a Christian relief, development and advocacy non-government organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. We currently work in 43 districts and have 48 Area Programmes implementing projects in health & nutrition, water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), livelihoods & resilience, education and child protection. World Vision (WV) is committed to the protection of children and adult beneficiaries from exploitation and abuse and will not employ people whose background is not suitable for working with these beneficiaries. All employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of all applicable background checks, including criminal record checks where possible.
Due to expansion in scope of our programmes, we are now seeking for a qualified and passionate individual willing to share in our vision and join the team in the following role.
Position: Associate Director, Communications
Report to: Director, Communications and Marketing
Location: Kampala – National Office
Advert Start Date: 1st September 2022
Advert End Date: 7th September 2022
Purpose of the position:
Increase the overall reputation, trust, and influence of World Vision Uganda. Provide strong strategic communications leadership for the organisation, which aligns with and supports income generation and delivery of marketing, resource mobilisation and public/external engagement goals. Lead in the development and implementation of an integrated strategy for the building of a high-performance communications function that is managed, structured, focused, and staffed for productive and quality work.
Key Outputs/Responsibilities.
Strategy & Planning:
• National communications strategy and annual business plan is developed, and subsequent operating implications are realised to ensure an efficient and integrated framework exists, providing overall leadership and ownership of all communications products and processes;
• A high performing communications function is increasingly able to partner with marketing and resource development to raise local sources of funding to support the ministry of World Vision sustainably;
New products are developed and refined to continuously engage and gain support from target audiences – internally and externally;
• Progress and results are measured and evaluated, with a view to realising consistent learning and growth.
Content Leadership:
• Children’s voices are amplified through high quality, multi-purposed content that inspires and connects with target audiences.
• Impact-led content drives and grows engagement with key audiences, demonstrating World Vision expertise.
• Emergency communications content is available and timely, serving advocacy, marketing, and fundraising needs.
Field, Technical Programme, Grant and Emergency communications are invested in to deliver high-value content that is used internally and externally.
• The development and delivery of high-quality child-focused content to priority audiences is delivered to meet partnership needs.
Public Engagement:
• Strategic media outreach and public engagement increases coverage of issues World Vision cares about and builds visibility and reputation, positioning World Vision as a trusted partner in Uganda.
• Timely and strategic communications content grows website and digital traffic, increasing World Vision Uganda’s social community.
Reputation risk is understood across senior leadership and is well managed.
Internal Engagement:
• Leadership regularly engage with staff through tools that are simple, foster two-way dialogue and are appropriate to the context.
• Staff are aware of and participate in global and national moments, motivated to share stories, and communicate on key messages as World Vision Ambassadors.
• Build World Vision’s brand and equip a pool of spokespersons and thought leaders to effectively communicate World Vision’s mission, vision, and Christian identity.
People Management:
• Lead the communications team structure development and recruitment process – ensuring high quality talent is attracted, motivated and retained.
• Design the division operational talent structure/organogram.
• Develop and ensure implementation of continuous professional development plans for Communications team.

Required Professional Experience
• Excellent organisational and management skills.
• Ability to identify and understand different audiences, utilise and adapt appropriate communication channels and content.
• Strong interpersonal, cross cultural and communication skills.
Excellent command of English both written and spoken. Proven ability to write and edit content at an outstanding level.
• 10-years’ experience leading and managing communications teams in international humanitarian and development sector, business, or creative industries.
• Demonstrated experience managing corporate partnerships and developing major donor relationships.
• Advanced technical skills in at least one or more of the major areas of the job, such as; creative services, public engagement, corporate communications, media relations, emergency communications.
• Proven experience of training and capacity building of diverse teams.
• Advanced level of computer proficiency, Mac and PC
• Experience working with children and youth.
Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification
• Degree in Communications, Media, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields.
• Professional certifications or advanced degree in any of the technical areas of communications, digital marketing, humanitarian and development sector advantageous
Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications
• Thorough knowledge of the communication, and media industry.
• Thorough knowledge of international development, World Vision development practice and communications needs.
• Emergency communications experience.
• Substantive training and mentoring experience in the development sector.
Travel and/or Work Environment: Working primarily in the head office in Kampala, semi-regular travel locally will be required.
Physical Requirements: Position sits in Kampala. Travel by road, flexibility with accommodation and dietary arrangements. Ability to partake in on-location production or live events.
Language & Nationality Requirements: Fluency: English & Ugandan
