Job Description


The Convenience Retail Assistant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the convenience store by delivering excellent customer service, maintaining product availability, ensuring accurate stock handling, and upholding high standards of store presentation, cleanliness, and safety. The role contributes to achieving sales targets, enhancing customer shopping experience, and ensuring compliance with company operational, financial, and Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) standards.

Responsibilities or duties

  • Deliver exceptional customer service by assisting customers, addressing enquiries, and promoting products and services.
  • Receive, replenish, merchandise, and rotate stock to ensure product availability and compliance with merchandising standards.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems accurately, process customer transactions, and reconcile cash in accordance with company procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, report stock shortages, damaged goods, and expiry dates, and support stock counts and reconciliations.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness, food safety, and store presentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, operational procedures, and HSSE requirements.
  • Support the implementation of promotional campaigns and merchandising initiatives to drive sales performance.
  • Assist in minimizing stock losses through adherence to inventory control and loss prevention procedures.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

  • Diploma in Business Administration, Sales and Marketing, Retail Management, or a related field is an added advantage.

Experience needed

  • Previous experience in retail, convenience store operations, customer service, or sales is an added advantage.
  • Experience operating a Point-of-Sale (POS) system and handling cash is desirable.
  • Experience in stock handling, merchandising, or inventory management is an advantage.

Technical Competencies

  • Customer service and sales skills.
  • Point-of-Sale (POS) system operation.
  • Stock handling and inventory management.
  • Cash handling and basic numeracy.
  • Product merchandising and display.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of food safety and retail operational standards.

The role is based in a convenience retail store and involves continuous interaction with customers, colleagues, and suppliers in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment. The incumbent is required to stand for extended periods, replenish shelves, lift and move stock within safe handling limits, and operate retail equipment such as point-of-sale systems. Shift work, including weekends, public holidays, and evenings, may be required. Compliance with Health, Safety, Security, Environmental (HSSE), and food safety standards is mandatory at all times.
