Job Description


The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, not-for-profit, international University first established in 1983; with 13 teaching sites in eight countries. AKU has seven hospitals and over 250 outreach health centres. The University is a non-denominational institution open to all, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, gender or national origin. Since 2001, AKU has offered academic programmes in nursing, medicine and education for East African Countries. The Aga Khan University will establish a campus in Kampala Uganda.
AKU invites applications for the following position;

Job title: Environmental Health & Safety Officer
Reporting to the Project Director, the EHS Officer shall be responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring the processes in the areas of environmental management, health protection and occupational safety during construction of the Academic Facilities and other projects for the Aga Khan University in Uganda.

Responsibilities:
• Create and implement the Environmental Management Plan and Health and Safety procedures
• Work with all employees, contractors and visitors to ensure that all safety policies, procedures and regulations are fully adhered to across the site on an ongoing basis
Oversee waste management and recycling operations on site in accordance with laid down procedures
• Ensure all the required corrective actions are promptly implemented as per required standards
• Schedule routine inspections to identify and timely rectification of non-compliance
• Prepare and maintain effective document control systems for the EHS activities
• Monthly reporting of all Environmental Health and Safety issues in accordance with international donor agency requirements
Overall management of the EHS incident reporting and investigation system on site
• Participate and record the internal and external safety audits observations

Requirement
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health or related field
• Minimum five years of construction site experience in EHS.
Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies
• Proficient in technology and equipment used in environmental inspections
• Must have experience on an international donor funded project; preferably one using IFC standards.
• Interpersonal skills with positive attitude necessary to work effectively with staff and contractors
• Must be bilingual; and speak at least one local language in addition to English.
