Job Description


The Executive Director will be responsible for supporting the Managing Director in the overall strategy formulation and implementation of astute leadership and management in line with the Bank’s vision, mission and values.

The Executive Director will ensure the Bank’s strategies and plans are aligned with short and long-term objectives; developing and driving a high-performance culture and, ultimately overseeing all business support activities to ensure they deliver the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission of the Bank.

The Executive Director will in addition effectively manage the Commercial Banking portfolio and co-ordinate all the relevant business sectors, products, services and resources to achieve the agreed sales volume targets, revenues and profitability. Accountable for the achievement of the overall performance of the Commercial Banking business within acceptable risk, regulatory, legal and compliance framework. Manage both internal and external relationships to bring the best value to the Bank.

Direct the creation of policies and procedures necessary for the operation of the Bank and implement all policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Directors.

JOB CONTEXT

  • Position the Commercial Banking business as a top tier solution in the market amongst competitor brands and products
  • Lead in the formulation of the Bank’s strategic, business and risk management plan and its implementation in consultation with Managing Director.
  • Keeping the financial position of the Bank under review to ensure that there is an appropriate balance of long-term and short term finance, and provision of adequate cash flow for day-to-day working and in compliance with statutory requirements and reporting.
  • As a member of the Board of Directors, the ED shares with other members their corporate responsibility for the formulation of policy and for the overall control of the Bank’s operations and financial goals.
  • Play a critical role in the Executive and the Board in developing the vision and strategic goals for the Bank;
  • Foster strong and robust relationships with Key stakeholders of the Bank including shareholders, customers, regulators and the communities in which we do our business;
  • Partnership & Stakeholder Management & Development – Work closely with the Board and the Executive Leadership Team to establish and review strategic priorities for key partnerships.
  • Support business growth and development through well-structured business plans and budgets;
  • Board Member and member to various Board and Management Committees and Member of the Executive Committee (EXCO) Team;
  • With the support of Managing Director maintain and uphold a strong Risk, Compliance and Governance Framework is embedded across the organisation.
  • Ensure strong risks follow ups are maintained in all the areas of Banking Operations mainly Finance and Treasury, Credit and Information Technology, in addition to other areas in Banking in terms of risk exposures and
  • Support the MD in the day to day running of the Bank.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Business & Financial Performance

· Work with the GE Commercial Banking and the country MD to put in place strategy and annually approved target market document for all sectors in Commercial Banking with complete information on customer segmentation, target names, products, services, revenues and profitability.

· Utilise the customer segmentation to drive growth and sustainability of financials and revenues

· Prepare and deliver on approved budgets.

· Translate Commercial Banking targets and agree individual annual and monthly targets with direct reports

· Responsible for the productivity and efficiency of the business groups, branch network and performance of area managers in Commercial Banking,

· Identify and initiate business development activities to achieve the set targets.

· Grow a strong and healthy balance sheet through the appropriate mix of deposits, risk assets, products, pricing and innovation to sustain customer relationships and gain market share.

· Maximum NPL of 3% of portfolio and 1% of portfolio revenues.

· Build and maintain productive relationships across units to support the delivery of the DB’s goals.

· Ensure all due incomes are duly booked and correctly recorded.

· Track and maintain divisional performance records including sales tracker, deposits, risk assets, provisions, incomes, costs and all relevant performance indicators on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis including reconciliation with financial control.

Customer Excellence

· Responsible for building strong relationships with key customers, business partners, Central Bank, Shareholders, local community etc. and leverage on this to gain a deeper insight of the business and develop the portfolio

· Provide strategic direction for the Sector in order to deliver the set targets.

· Achieve minimum of 5 products per customer and wallet share targets.

· Achieve minimum customer satisfaction rating of ‘very satisfied’.

· Deliver service within SLAs.

· Responsible for embedding a culture of service excellence in Commercial Banking.

· Own and monitor escalated customer and regulatory queries/complaints and resolutions process.

· In-depth understanding of competitor activities, financial service trends and banking practices both nationally and internationally in order to continually stay ahead of the market in customer solutions

· Ensure up to date competitor analysis is available and fed back to management appropriately.

· Continuously feedback into the development of solutions-based products development.

· Become an active member of the local community to ensure brand recognition and relevance in the community.

Process, Controls & Operational Performance

· Own and manage the strategic risks and governance issues in Commercial Banking in line with Group policy and procedures.

· Ensure all credits are processed within the guidelines of the Group Credit Policy and Procedures (GCPP) manual.

· Work closely with Credit and Risk to monitor the credit portfolio of the department and initiate proposals for new facilities or facility modifications where necessary.

· Pro-actively and timeously identify potential problems (early warning systems) and formulate appropriate risk mitigating strategies.

· Ensure own and Department’s compliance to legal and regulatory banking requirements, audits and any other credit, risk or governance directives.

· Ensure adherence to all Group Policies and Procedures including; the CAP Manual, the Credit Policy Manual, Anti-Money Laundering policy and the Code of Business Ethics etc.

· Ensure all HR policies are complied with within Commercial Banking

· Achieve minimum ARR rating of ‘Acceptable’.

· Ensure financial reports of Commercial Banking is accurate and MIS is up to date and relevant to the Bank’s business.

· Provide feedback on performance of service providers.

· Provide feedback to various sectors on the performance of staff e.g. IT, Operations etc

Leadership & People Management

· Maintain and develop a culture of high performance, values and reputation in the Department.

· Manage the performance of direct reports and ensure all KPIs are set and met.

· Responsible for driving a strong staffing pipeline and succession plan for Commercial Banking.

· Selection, appraisal and performance of direct reports including delivery of all KPIs.

· Maintain and develop a culture of high performance, mutual respect, values and reputation in the Unit.

· Actively work with Country Head, to identify any operational and resource gaps (people, budget and equipment).

· Understand and communicate clearly the business strategy of Commercial Banking and Unit in a manner that enables buy in of the Unit.

· Implement at least one training per quarter for all staff.

· Motivate and engage the team to deliver on the unit’s set targets.

· Ensure competent back-up at all times and compliance with Leave Roster.

· Provide honest feedback on performance of colleagues

· Share knowledge and best practice with team members and other Unit heads

JOB PROFILE

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Business-related field from a recognised reputable institution
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Banking, Finance or marketing desired
  • At least 10 years in banking or financial services sector and with not less than 10 years relevant senior managerial and executive experience with focus on building businesses and managing balance sheet portfolios.
  • Effective strategic planning and knowledge. Understanding of governance and legal frameworks.
  • Demonstrated people management skills
