Job Description


General Summary
Personnel will work with the meningitis team on a number of clinical trials conducted in parallel, at Mulago and Kiruddu hospitals.

Key Responsibilities
The lab technologist will:
• Conduct blood sample draw according to the study protocol and study SOPs.
• Centrifuge samples as per SOPs.
• Transport collected samples to the respective laboratories.
• Ensure proper documentation on different laboratory request forms, study documents, and correct labelling of lab samples before transporting them to the processing laboratories.
• Notify the study coordinator regarding any study supplies that need ordering.
• Maintain proper disposal of sharps and any other potentially infectious waste.
• Work on alternate weekends to carry out sample collection for the admitted participants.
• Maintain laboratory records according to study requirements ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
• Assist medical doctors in carrying out clinical procedures such as lumbar punctures.
• Participate as a full member of the IDI care team by communicating effectively and liaising with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Attend all staff meetings as may be required.
• Complete and maintain current training in Good Laboratory Practices and Human Subjects Protection.
• Remain knowledgeable about all the meningitis study protocols.
• Maintain sufficient inventory of test kits, controls and other supplies.

Person Specification
• Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
• Two years of research experience
• Good Laboratory Practice and Human Subjects Protection Certificate
• Practicing License
