Job Description


The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following positions:

Laboratory Technologist (02 Positions)
Position Code: ALT – 1021
Reports to: Senior Scientist
Station: Kyamulibwa/Lukaya

Job Purpose:
The position will participate in a variety of research and analytical laboratory support activities within MRC/UVRI. The position holder will conduct remote sample processing in the field and ensure optimal pre-analytical sample handling of the DOP study. He/she will make detailed observations, and analyse data according to laboratory protocols/SOPs. They will ensure effective functioning of the laboratory while adhering to SOPs and health and safety guidelines. The work as part of a scientific team to carry out a wide variety of Basic Science ancillary laboratory tasks and research experiments according to SOPs. They also provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory function effectively while adhering to SOPs and health and safety guidelines.

Roles & Responsibilities
• Receiving, processing and storing study samples according to SOPs so as to maximise their quality in subsequent testing;
• Implementing GCLP practices: Cleaning and disinfecting equipment; Tracking equipment servicing requirements; Monitoring temperatures; Data backup; Running equipment performance QCs;
• Ensuring that required reagents and supplies are in sufficient stocks and are kept securely in recommended conditions;
• Performing IATA compliant shipment of samples to and from partner laboratories;
• Ensuring health and safety according to SOPs;
• Conducts basic laboratory data analysis;
• Develops SOPs as directed by supervisor;
• Participates in laboratory meetings, presentations and scientific journal clubs;
• Participates in the procurement of laboratory equipment, supplies and consumables;
• Oversees the maintenance of laboratory equipment and laboratory environment; and,
• Keeps stock and track of reagents, supplies and other consumables and compile lists for replacement orders.

Person Specification
• Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Technology (Biological) or its equivalent from a recognized University;
• GCP training;
• At least one year of experience working in a Diabetes research setting.
• Should possess hands-on experience in designing and setting up remote pre-analytic sample processing measures (SOPs) to ensure quality and accurate results;
• Should have good communication skills;
• Basic knowledge in diabetes and related laboratory diagnostic techniques;
• Basic skills in scientific writing;
• Should possess good personal integrity;
• Emotional resourcefulness;

• Pro-activeness;
