JOB DETAILS:

Background:

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab & Translational Lab), Global Health Security and Health System Strengthening.
IDI wishes to recruit motivated and competent individual to fill the vacancy below on a full-time basis for six months, which may be renewable if funding available:
Job Title: Locum Academic Psychologist/ Social Scientist
Vacancy Code : LAPSSX001
Classification : Locum/fulltime
Reports to: Principal Investigator
Duty Station: Kampala with travel to West Nile region and Kalangala District
Salary: Commensurate with training and experience
General Summary:
Will be required to provide both academic and practical psychology / social science support to Ugandan Academy of Health Innovation for research and implementation of behavioural change interventions using new technologies including tools for COVID and Ebola support and support human centred design of new technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Be able to work in a multidisciplinary research study
• To adapt health information tips from WHO/ MoH of Uganda into health information for mHealth studies
• Support community information dissemination, community surveillance and encourage health seeking behavior
• To work on analysis of FGD and IDI with the Academy social science team
• Engage with local communities in the local languages
• Provide psychological support to distressed members of the community if necessary
with support from Clinical psychologist
• Support development of new technologies from human centred design perspective

Person specifications:

• Completion of Bachelor’s degree and Masters degree. Either bachelors or Masters
must be in a psychology related subject.
• Minimum of 2 years work experience
• Experience of working in both clinical setting and academic is an added advantage
• Ability to communicate with community in at least one local language (Luganda,
Lugbara, Swahilli) an advantage
• Knowledge and understanding of health related infectious diseases such as Ebola/
HIV / COVID
• Knowledge of good communication skills
• Ability to work in unsupervised environment
• Ability to fully participate in a team
• Experience writing research articles with at least one publication/ conference
presentation
• Knowledge of Microsoft packages such as word and excel essential. Experience with
Nvivo software an advantage
