Job Description


Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for Lung Health in the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Our mission is Lung health research that integrates disease prevention, clinical care and training in sub-Saharan Africa. MLI in partnership with Case Western Reserve Collaboration are implementing a new sponsored grant from the US NIH as part of the consortia entitled, “HIV-Associated Malignancy Research Centre”, (HAMRC) and a grant entitled, “Lung Cancer in East Africa and the relationship to HIV-1 infection: epidemiology, molecular characterization and imaging. The study seeks to understand how lung cancer is triggered, how it is molecularly defined, and whether biological versus chronological age of the DNA methylome can serve as a prognostic indicator of disease. MLI now seeks to recruit a Study Medical officer to support implementation of project activities.

Position 1: Medical Officer (1)
Reports to: Study Coordinator
Engagement: Full time
Duration: 1 Year, renewable upon satisfactory performance Duty Station: Kampala

Job Summary
The Medical Officer will be responsible for conducting clinical evaluation and performing day to day management of study participants. He or she will be responsible for cohort retention and adherence to the study procedures.

Roles and responsibilities
1. Assess the eligibility criteria and enroll eligible participants
2. Obtain informed consent, and counseling of participants on the study procedures.
3. Clinical assessment of participants and monitoring of participant’s response to treatment.
4. Schedule participants for study follow up visits
5. Recommend patients for chest X-ray and chest CT scans and other laboratory investigations.
6. Perform quality control to ensure the screening log, screening CRF and patient locator form are complete.
7. Schedule patient visits for the air pollution assessment
8. Ensure patients from referral facilities are received and logistics are available.
9. Maintain proper study documentation.
10. Upload CT scan images in drop box and enter corresponding patient data in ODK
11. Provide weekly reports on study indicators to the coordinator

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
• MBChB
• Registration with the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council with a valid Annual “Science for Healthy Lungs” Practicing License (APL).
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements & Good Clinical Practices (GCP)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
