Job Description


The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development through the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (Mines Department) is implementing the Mineral Wealth and Mining Infrastructure Project and Minerals Laboratories Equipping and systems Development Project.
In order to implement the above project efficiently and effectively, the Ministry seeks to recruit competent, trained and well-motivated persons to fill a number of vacancies in the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines. The positions are on contractual basis and subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance.
Mining Lawyer (2 POSITIONS)
Reports to: Director-DGSM
Location: Entebbe
Job purpose
Draft, review and advice on mining contracts and agreements, compliance of mineral rights and legal matters with relevant existing laws of Uganda, resolve legal disputes, monitor tax compliance and liaise with the office of the Attorney General on matters concerning mineral exploration, licencing and mining. .

Duties and responsibilities
• The Officer will perform the following:
• Ensure that all applications for mineral rights are compliant with relevant existing laws of Uganda,
• Advise the Directorate on all legal matters pertaining to the mining industry,
• Advise on the resolution of legal disputes arising out of all business processes and activities of the mineral sector.

Person Specifications Qualifications:
• A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Law from a recognised University
• A Postgraduate training in Mining Law is a MUST
• Any qualifications in Mineral Policy and Law, Regulation and Management of Mining, will be an added Advantage:
• At least five (5) years of professional working experience in handling cases related to the Mineral Sector
• Competences: Good understanding of the Mineral sub-sector, technical competencies, negotiation skills, strategic thinking, decision-making capabilities, Public Sector Management with good understanding of Government institutional policy framework, Ethics and Integrity, Accountability, Results oriented, good Interpersonal skills, Communication and Computer Skills.

Job Education: Bachelor’s Degree
Job Experience: 5 years
