Since 1995, PELUM Uganda has been working to improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and the sustainability of rural communities, by fostering ecological land use management. We: Share skills and knowledge about good practices and techniques, Undertake research and demonstration projects and advocate for policies that better support small-scale farmers. PELUM Uganda is part of a 12-country-strong association of civil society organisations in eastern, central and southern Africa.

Job Summary:

The Programme Assistant, Agricultural Market Development will implement activities in line with PELUM’s strategy and policies so as to contribute to realising PELUM’s goals. Job summary The jobholder is responsible for the day to day direct implementation of field activities as assigned by the Programme Officer – Agricultural Market Development. This post belongs to the Agricultural Market Development programme.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Programme Planning, development and implementation

  • Work with Programme Officer – AMD to implement AMD project activities.
  • Support in the development of the AMD programme
  • Develop periodic work plans for activity implementation and write reports.
  • Make appropriate arrangements and prepare logistics for meetings, trainings and other activities.
  • Collect and share relevant project information and data in accordance with the Programme/project M&E frameworks including supporting M&E processes.
  • Participate in preparation (content) and conducting of trainings.

Other Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the organisation’s key events and represent the organisation in relevant fora nationally and internationally.
  • Provide technical support in AMD to beneficiaries when required.
  • Support and participate in other programme area activities when required.
  • Identify existing and potential funding opportunities, and participate in the technical aspects of project proposal development process in collaboration with the AMD Manager and Officer.
  • Support preparation of high-quality activity, progress and donor reports.
  • Participate in defining programme and financial objectives, targets and monitoring processes and collect, collate and share relevant project information in line with the programme M&E framework.
  • Participate in the documentation and sharing of learnings from Programme implementation.
  • Identify thematic advocacy issues and forward them to the advocacy team.
  • Ensure resources under his or her care are properly deployed and utilised.
  • Support membership capacity building
  • Regularly update member information
  • Compile assessments of membership participation in PELUM Uganda activities

In addition to individual respective tasks, all PELUM employees are expected to:

  • Participate in research agendas and ensure findings inform programme designs.
  • To adhere to our organizational values and to actively promote their application amongst colleagues.
  • To undertake tasks in a creative, self-driven and innovative fashion.
  • Participate in raising resources for building PELUM’s reserves.
  • Ensure that all activities are implemented in a gender sensitive manner.

  • To identify and implement additional tasks/ ideas of benefit to the organization (whether directly linked to one’s job or not).
  • Perform any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or in any related field is desired. A Diploma in Agribusiness or Agriculture with relevant experience.
  • Knowledge in Agricultural Market Development, agriculture quality & standards and value chain analysis.
  • Research and documentation.
  • Training and research skills.
  • Industry experience
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the agricultural sector. Management skills
  • Team player with positive attitude, flexible mind, motivational skills and Report writing skills.

  • Able to multitask and to work under pressure.
  • Communication and Interpersonal skills
